Christmas markets in Luxembourg and the Greater Region

The Luxembourg Christmas season opens in late November with Winterlights, the capital's festival of lights: three markets across Place d'Armes, Place de la Constitution and the Gare quarter, a large ice rink, a Ferris wheel and nightly illuminations that run through early January. The Ville de Luxembourg organises the Kleeschen on Tour parade for Saint-Nicolas Day, when Kleeschen and Housecker walk from Gare Centrale to Place Guillaume II distributing candy bags to children along the route.

Outside the capital, the Chreschtmoart in Echternach fills the medieval town square, and smaller markets appear in Vianden, Clervaux and across the Moselle valley. The Greater Region multiplies the choices: Strasbourg's Christkindelsmaerik, one of the oldest in Europe (since 1570), is two hours by train from Luxembourg. Trier's Weihnachtsmarkt on the Hauptmarkt is under an hour away, and the Marche de Noel in Metz fills Place Saint-Louis and the cathedral quarter. The Saarbrucker Christkindl-Markt and the Fetes de Saint-Nicolas in Nancy round out the cross-border circuit.

Planning a weekend trip? The markets typically open in late November and close by Christmas Eve or just after. Most are free to enter; you pay at individual chalets for food, mulled wine and crafts. Public transport works well for the nearest ones: direct trains connect Luxembourg to Metz (50 min), Trier (50 min) and Strasbourg (2 h).
