Data Analytics for Business

What students learn to do
LO1
Frame
Turn a business problem into a precise analytical question and the indicators that show progress.
LO2
Prepare and retrieve
Clean real tabular data in a spreadsheet, and query a multi-table dataset with core SQL.
LO3
Design and communicate
Build honest, decision-oriented charts and dashboards, and turn a finding into a short narrative.
LO4
Interpret models
Read the output of common predictive techniques, judge it in business costs, and spot overfitting, leakage and biased samples.
LO5
Use AI responsibly
Use a general-purpose AI assistant to speed up analysis, check what it produces and document how it was used.
LO6
Assess governance
Identify the GDPR and EU AI Act questions a project raises, and what a manager remains accountable for.
One real case, from the first hour to the last
The course runs on the order history of Olist, a Brazilian e-commerce marketplace published as open data: about 100,000 orders from 2016 to 2018, across nine linked tables. Each group receives a management brief in the first session and defends its recommendation in a pitch at the end.
Assessment
- 30%Group projectDashboard and a brief of at most four pages
- 20%Group pitchTen minutes, then four minutes of questions
- 20%Milestones and participationThree milestones; participation includes the end-of-session quizzes
- 30%Written examIndividual, 30 minutes, closed book
End-of-session quizzes
After Sessions 1 to 5, a quiz of 10 questions in 10 minutes checks the key ideas; from Session 2 on, two questions come back from earlier sessions. Students sign in with a Google account, take it once, see their score at once and the full corrections when the quiz closes. Quizzes count towards participation.
